Panoramic view of the Bastide

The Bastide country house is the work of Mr Berges, reputed sculptor and headmaster of the Aix en Provence technical school, the "Ecole des Arts et Métiers". In the mid 20^th century, he purchased what was then nothing but a dovecote in the countryside around Aix. Drawn by the region's exceptional luminosity so greatly prized by artists, he decided to extend the building and turn it into a workshop and exhibition space for his work. Later, when time came for him to retire, he set up what would be his last home there.

The Bastide was fully renovated in 1999, following the original proportions to the letter and using exactly the same materials, such as wrought iron, natural stone flagstones, lime plaster pigmented with ochre from Roussillon in Provence, etc...
